abstract 1472479 Sintered composite metal-metal wire bodies SIEMENS AG 15 March 1974 [23 May 1973] 21657/74 Heading C7D In the production of dense bodies comprising a metal powder and metal wires, detrimental reaction between the metals upon heating is prevented by adding to or coating on one metal before, during or after forming the body, a substance which reacts with the other metal or with a coating on the other metal to form a product which is inert to both metals. Heating is then applied to form the inert reaction product. The substance may be O 2 , C, B, Si or N2 which reacts to form the metal oxide, carbide, boride, silicide or nitride. The substance may be added as a powder to the mixture e.g. C or Si or it may be diffused into the body and deposited from a gas such as a hydrocarbon or N 2 . A coating of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, V or Hf may be applied to one of the metals, this coating reacting with the substance to form the inert reaction product. In the examples C powder is mixed with Ni powder and W or Mo wires, the powder is compressed and swaged and then heated e.g. at 900‹C to form a WC or Mo 2 C inert layer. Alternatively a mixture of CH 4 and H 2 may be used to form the WC.
