titleOfInvention | Chloro-methylation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers |
abstract | 1482535 Chloromethylation of styrene/divinyl benzene copolymers MONTEDISON SpA 26 Nov1974 [29 Nov 1973] 51238/74 Headings C3C and C3P Styrene / divinyl benzene copolymers are chloromethylated in the presence of an acidic or Friedel-Crafts catalyst with a mixture of methylal and thionyl chloride in a molar ratio not exceeding 2 : 1 - In a modification the methylal may be replaced by a mixture of methanol and paraformaldehyde in a molar ratio of methanol : formaldehyde not exceeding 2 : 1. In examples, the starting copolymers are porous; the catalyst is SnCl 4 , ZnCl 2 or chlorosulphonic acid; and the products are aminated with trimethylamine. |
