titleOfInvention Lead-acid batteries
abstract 1489182 Forming plates for lead-acid batteries LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 30 July 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 37922/73 Heading H1B A method of producing plates for lead-acid batteries comprises applying paste to the plate grids, immersing the grids in an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, passing a current between the grids to raise the solution temperature to between 150‹ and 180‹ F. during the conversion of the paste to active material, stopping the current when the plates have been partially charged, allowing the partly formed plates to stand in the solution for at least 30 minutes and then completing the conversion of the paste to active material. The grids are made of lead alloy and are assembled in a polypropylene case 14, the positive plate grids being connected to lugs 17 and the negative plate grids to lugs 18. A spigot 17a on each lug 17 extends through a hole 16a in the partition walls 16 and is melted by a resistance welder 21 to connect the lugs 17, 18 of adjacent cells. The cell compartments are then filled with sulphuric acid and a D.C. source is connected to terminals 19. When the battery has been fully charged, the case is inverted to drain out the acid and then a thermoplastic lid is welded to the case.
