titleOfInvention Method of and apparatus for the horizontal continuous casting of metals
abstract 1491724 Continuous casting INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE 26 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 51045/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] Molten metal is passed from a container 1 to a horizontal (copper) mould 4 through a refractory conduit 3 whose outlet (which may be chamfered or rounded off internally) is of smaller area than the adjacent inlet to the mould and, in order to stabilize the metal stream surface at a space 23 formed about the stream in the mould inlet where there is an abrupt increase in the flow passage, electromagnetic forces are generated in the stream in the conduit 3 to accelerate the stream periphery so that it adopts a convex contour. By way of a pipe 18 and channels 17 in the end face of the conduit 3, a neutral gas, possibly with lubricating particles is injected into the annular space 23 to at least equal the metallostatic pressure and protect against oxidation. A linear motor inductor 14 has turns 19 mounted in annular grooves in a frusto-conical frame 21 about a thin refractory wall 13 and may be connected to a three-phase supply. A silicon nitride ring 22 at the conduit mouth abuts the end of a starter bar at the commencement of casting. A jack 8 applies the copper mould 4, on a carriage 7, against the end of the conduit 3. Withdrawal rollers 9 and guiding rollers follow the mould.
