titleOfInvention Methods and apparatus for controlling the supply of a feed gas to dissolution devices
abstract 1495902 Aerating liquids AIRCO INC 22 March 1976 [2 April 1975] 11429/76 Heading B1C Apparatus for dissolving a gas in a liquid comprises a chamber 16' adapted to be immersed in a body 11 of the liquid and having a liquid inlet 17 and a liquid outlet 27, means 30..34 for supplying gas to the chamber so as to depress the level of liquid 26, and establish a gas space 25 thereabove, means 21..23 for establishing a gravitational fall of liquid through said gas space 25 and an open-ended dip tube 36 in communication with the gas space the depth of submergence of the tube 36 limiting the extent to which the liquid level in the chamber 16' can be depressed and thereby the maximum height of the gravitational fall. In use e.g. as part of an activated sludge process, dissolved oxygen concentration is measured by sensor 30 and used to control the oxygen supply, the liquid level in chamber 16' varying accordingly up to the limit established by diptube 36. A pump 18 is used to pump liquid into chamber 16' the power requirements of its motor 20 varying according to the height of the gravitational fall, so that economy in the power requirements of the process as well as in oxygen usage are realised at part - load operating conditions. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown) two or more chambers are immersed in the body of liquid the gas spaces of the chambers being interconnected serially and the last chamber being connected to the dip tube.
