titleOfInvention | 4,4'-thio-bis(alkylphenol)/formaldehyde condensates and a process for their production |
abstract | 1497324 4,4<SP>1</SP> - Thio - bis(alkylphenol)/ formaldehyde condensates; antioxidants RUHRCHEMIE AG 9 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 19685/75 Headings C3R and C3P 4,41 - Thio - bis(alkylphenol)formaldehyde condensates having a molecular weight of from 1000-4000 are prepared by reacting a 4,41-thiobis(alkylphenol) containing a free hydrogen atom in an ortho-position with respect to each phenolic OH group with formaldehyde in the presence of a protonic acid as catalyst, and optionally a solvent, the molar ratio of the said bisphenol to HCHO being from 1 : 0À5 to 1 : 10 and the molar ratio of the protonic acid to HCHO being from 1 : 0À01 to 1 : 10, and the molar ratio of the said bisphenol to the protonic acid preferably being from 1 : 0À1 to 1 : 10. The bisphenol preferably has the formula wherein R 1 and R<SP>1</SP> 1 are branched alkyl groups of up to 8 carbon atoms and R 2 and R<SP>1</SP> 2 are hydrogen or a linear or branched alkyl group of up to 8 carbon atoms. Suitable solvents are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons having boiling points of from 70- 150‹ C. Suitable catalysts are HCl, H 3 PO 4 , p-toluene sulphonic acid and mixtures of HCl and oxalic acid, or H 2 SO 4 and boric acid. The condensates can be used as antioxidants or stabilizers for olefin polymers, particularly polyethylene. In the examples condensates prepared by reacting 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thio bis(3-methyl-6-tbutylphenol) with aqueous HCHO in the presence of HCl and optionally oxalic acid as catalyst and either benzene or a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons boiling at 150‹ C. as solvent, are used to stabilize polyethylene. |
