titleOfInvention Well tool with retention sleeve
abstract 1521498 Well tool coverings DRESSER INDUSTRIES INC 10 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 50674/75 Heading E1F A well tool such as a packer may be protected from adverse environments encountered during its location in the well bore by providing a cover 17, the cover being formed by placing the well tool in a sleeve of shrinkable elastomeric material, and then shrinking the material so that the sleeve becomes tightly fitted on the tool. The material may be heatshrinkable e.g. polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride or neoprene, or it may be shrinkable by chemical reaction or by applying an electric current. Preferably it retains chemical and thermal stability after shrinkage, and a degree of elasticity so that the cover 17 elastically retains in position such movable or expandable elements as gripping member 12 and anchor buttons 13. After location and hydraulic activation of the tool, the force applied to such elements 12, 13 causes them to cut through the cover 17 to grip the casing wall. The cover 17 is also elastic enough to allow radial expansion of the then axially compressed resilient packer elements 15. A cut-out portion of the cover 17 may be provided in the region of e.g. the gripping portion of the member 12, less hydraulic force being then required for actuation. The cover may be removed from a located well tool by dissolving it in a solvent pumped down the well bore.
