titleOfInvention Improvements in mechanism for dispensing ingredients, particularly in the manufacture of confectionery
abstract 166,531. Onofrio, L. d'. July 17, 1920, [Convention date]. Depositing-machines; coating articles with powdered materials. -In a machine particularly used for moulding and coating candies or the like with starch previous to coating them with sugar, travelling trays 7, carrying starch in which the mould impressions are made, pass beneath a syrup or sugar boiler 3 and a reciprocable starch sprinkler 6 and automatic means are provided whereby the supplies of syrup and starch are intermittently controlled. The boiler bottom has a transverse line of perforations 15 which are controlled by registering perforations in a transversely sliding plate 16, and the starch sprinkler 6 has a meshed opening 19 towards which the bottom of the vessel slopes. The trays 7 are carried on rollers 80 and on endless chains 79, working in slots 78 in the rails 2, and are moved between guides 9 by an endless chain conveyer 10 having upstanding projections 11 which engage the rear edges of the trays. The plate 16 is operated through levers 26, 27, 31, 38 by the front edge of each tray contacting with the roller lever 21 by which means the perforations 15 are opened when the front edge of a tray comes beneath them, the perforations being closed, when the rear edge of the tray leaves them, by the front edge of the tray contacting with a pivoted lever 42 which operates the sliding rod 39 which being connected with the lever mechanism reverses the motion of the plate 16. Trip means are provided so that the actuation of levers 21, 42 will not produce mutual interference. Fig. 4 shows in plan, with the boiler 3 removed, the reciprocating mechanism for the starch sprinkler which is mounted in guides 46 supported on blocks on the rails 2. The rear face of the sprinkler is provided with a projection 52 which is normally kept out of engagement with a revolving notched wheel 53 by a sliding head 69 on the shaft 67, a spring 51, carried on a spindle 50 which passes through a cross member 48, tending always to move the sprinkler towards the boiler. The head 69 is attached to a slidable sleeve 65 having a collar 63 against which presses a returning spring 68. The head 69 is withdrawn from the projection 52 by an arrangement of levers 56, 57, 59, 61. 64, the front edge of the tray contacting with the lever 56 and forcing the collar 63 against the spring when the front edge of the tray comes below the mesh 19. The sprinkler is thus reciprocated by the engagement of the projection 52 with the wheel 53. The head 69 is returned when the rear edge of the tray leaves the mesh 19 by releasing the lever 64 from the rear edge of the tray. The mechanisms are operated by a common motor and sagging of the chains 79 is prevented by sprocket wheels 77 mounted on transverse shafts, and sagging of the conveyer 10 is prevented by blocks situated beneath the upper run of the conveyer. The bottom of the boiler is provided with an adjusting screw which abuts against the end of the plate 16, the movement of which is limited by a spring. The boiler is provided with a lid 13 and is heated by a steam or hot-water jacket 14 having a drain cock 18.
