| abstract | A microbiocidal composition contains a microbiocidally active halosulphone together with a carrier or diluent therefor, the halosulphone having the general formula: <IMAGE> in which X is a halogen atom, preferably a chlorine or bromine atom; each of the groups R is an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl (other than ???-hydroxyalkyl), alkoxyalkyl (other than ???-alkoxyalkyl), phenyl, halophenyl or alkylphenyl group or the groups R together form a polymethylene chain; and R<1> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group or a group -COOR<2> or SO2R<2> (in which R<2> is an alkyl group). Compounds of Formula i in which the groups R, R<1> and X have the meanings defined above and in which: R is a hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl group; R<1> is a hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl group; R<1> is a group -COOR<2> in which R<2> is an alkyl group containing at least two carbon atoms and R is an alkyl group; or the group R forms a polymethylene chain and R<1> is other than a methyl group; are new compounds and are provided as a further feature of the invention. The invention also provides a method of killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria or fungi which comprises applying to the bacteria or fungi a halosulphone of formula (I) as defined above. |
