abstract | A multi-plate clutch, eg for a racing car, comprises a flywheel ring 5 with drive plates 7, a hub flange 6 with driven plates 8, a clutch cover assembly 10 and a conical spring 90. The clutch cover assembly includes a pressure plate 29 and a diaphragm spring 30 which selectively engages and disengages the plates 7, 8. Conical spring 90 has a rigidity less than that of the diaphragm spring 30 which allows, prior to starting a race, the clutch to be partially engaged at high engine RPM. This partial engagement generates heat which causes both plates 7, 8 and surrounding components to expand so as to produce an axial force that is absorbed by deformation of the conical spring 90. On full engagement of the clutch the conical spring 90 is pressed flat be the diaphragm spring 30. The conical spring 90 may be replaced by an elastically deformable pressure plate (129, fig 4) or by a conically shaped friction plate (7b, fig 5) having a low rigidity or by a carbon fibre reinforced composite member (80, fig 6). |
