abstract | A system by which the orientation of an object 10 can be determined in relation to a plurality of sensing receivers 20-26 positioned at known points therearound. A directional transmission from a known face of the object is initiated by a trigger signal from a timing transmitter 16 at the beginning of a timeslot, at which point the sensing receivers are also reset. A control system polls the receivers at the end of the timeslot to determine those on which the directional transmission has been incident. The positions of the receivers may be fixed. The directional transmission may be a radio wave, ultra-violet, infra-red, visible light or a soundwave, typically ultrasound. The timing and resetting signals are radio transmissions. Where the directional transmission is ultrasound, the time periods latched by the sensing receivers can be related to the distances between the transmitter and the receivers. The location of the transmitter on the object, and therefore the orientation of the latter can be determined using computed distances to selected receivers. Alternatively a device with a narrow beam angle is mounted facing upwards on the object and the position of the object relative to receivers in a horizontal plane above the object is determined by polling the receivers for those which received the transmission. Alternatively the receivers are polled and the position of the directional transmitter on the object is determined by computing the distances, from which can then be determined the facing direction of the object. In a further arrangement a directional beam is transmitted from an object towards the receivers and the latter are polled to determine those on which the beam has been incident together with the times of incidence, and computing means determines the direction of propagation and therefore the position and orientation of the object. |
