Recondensing helium cryostat |
abstract |
A cryostat arrangement for storing liquid helium comprises an outer jacket (2 fig 1), a helium container (5 fig 1) installed therein and a neck pipe (3 fig 1) extending from the helium container to the outer jacket, all of which delimit an evacuated chamber (9 fig 1) which surrounds the helium container. A refrigerator 1b e.g. a pulse tube cooler is installed in the neck pipe and includes a cold finger (4 fig 1) having a condensing portion (15 fig 1) located in the lower end region of the neck pipe. The condensing portion is at least partially surrounded by a condensation chamber 16b, which has a first lower opening 17b to permit draining of liquid helium, and a second opening which communicates with a lower end of a gas supply pipe. The upper end of the gas supply pipe terminates in the region of the upper end of the neck pipe. The cold finger may be is surrounded by at least one connecting element (12b fig 3) which divides the neck pipe into two partial volumes connected to one another through openings (20 fig 3), the connecting element also being penetrated by the gas supply pipe. The evacuated chamber may containing a radiation shield 11b coupled to the neck pipe, and the connecting element may consist of copper. The lower opening 17b may include a tube, and be immersed in liquid helium. |
