Low friction touchdown area for an electric motor or generator |
abstract |
An electric motor or generator having a stator 231 and back plate 230 with stator teeth 401 for mounting electrical coils 402 and a rotor has the rotor magnet retainer ring 351 mounted to the rotor wall 221 carrying a touchdown ring 250, an inner surface of which opposes the circumferential stator back plate surface that is parallel to an axis of rotation of the rotor and is axially separated from the stator teeth. The material 501 (Fig 4) on one or both of the opposing surfaces have a low coefficient of friction or one of both of the surfaces may be recessed to retain low friction bearings 256 to be mounted therein. Materials such as nylon, PTFE, ApticoteTM, TeflonTMor diamond like carbon DLL may be used. The arrangement is such that contact in the touchdown area occurs before the stator teeth and the rotor magnets 242 can contact each other. |
