titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to dyes and dyeing
abstract 247,787. Morton, J., Jones, J. I. M., Wylam, B., Harris, J. E. G., Wilson, J., and Morton Sundour Fabrics, Ltd. Aug. 11, 1924. Leuco-compounds of vat dyes; derivatives of.- Compounds which are soluble in water or dilute alkali, or in some cases in dilute acid, are obtained by treating a vat dyestuff with an alkylsulphuric halide in the presence of a metal and an organic base and with or without a diluent. The reaction may be carried out in a single stage or the vat dyestuff, organic base. and metal may be first boiled together and the reaction mixturetreated with the alkylsulphuric halide; the reaction is facilitated by adding acids or acid salts to the mixture of dyestuff metal and base. The primary reaction products may be extracted with dilute alkali and water-soluble compounds isolated from the filtrate by salting out &c. The process is applicable to indigoid dyestuffs such as dichlor-dibrom-indigo, and to benzanthrone, indanthrone, flavanthrone, pyranthrone, and anthraquinoneacridone dyestuffs. Flavanthrone yields two different compounds, one blue and one red; the latter is in general obtained. when copper is used as the metal, or when a reaction temperature above 50‹ C. is employed. The cornpound obtained from indigo in presence of pyridine is probably a methylpyridinium compound of indigo sulphuric acid. A large number or examples are given in which the following parent materials are specified,'as vat dyestuffs :-Caledon jade green (dimethoxydibenzanthrone), Caledon brilliant purple RR (dichlorisodibenzanthrone), Caledon green B (nitrodibenzanthrone), Caledon red BN (anthraquinone naphthacridone), Caledon gold orange G (pyranthrone), Caledon blue R (indanthrone). Caledon blue GCD (dichlorindanthrone), Caledon yellow G (flavanthrone), indigo, 5 : 7 : 5<1> : 7<1>-tetrabromindigo, Brilliant indigo BASF 2B (4 : 4<1>-dichlor-7: 7<1>-dibromindigo), 5 : 5<1>-dibrom-7 : 7<1>-diethoxythioindigo: as organic bases or diluents :-pyridine, dimethylaniline, quinoline, quinaldine, a mixture of pyridine and chlorbenzene or carbon disulphide : as metals : -zinc, magnesium, cadmium, iron, copper, cobalt, aluminium, antimony, tin, and a mixture of iron and zinc : as alkylsulphuric halides methyl. and ethyl-sulphuric chloride; as acids or acid salts :-zinc chloride, sodium bisulphite, stannous chloride, acetic acid, dilute hydrochloric acid, pyridine hydrochloride. The dyeings obtained with the compound from nitrodibenzan. throne become green when treated with bisulphite solution and grey to black when treated with acid ferric chloride. Specification 186,057 is referred to.
