A synthetic garnet material comprising a yttrium iron garnet structure with bismuth being substituted for at least some yttrium, gadolinium being substituted for at least some yttrium, and charge balance achieved by calcium and/or zirconium substituting for at least some yttrium. Preferably, the material does not include sillenite as a second phase. There may be 1.4 units of bismuth substituted for yttrium or between 1.4 and 2.5 units of bismuth. Preferably, charge balance is achieved by use of both Ca and Zr. The synthetic garnet may be free of yttrium. Also claimed is a method of manufacturing a synthetic garnet material, the method comprising providing a YIG crystal structure, substituting bismuth for at least some yttrium, substituting gadolinium for at least some yttrium and charge balancing by substituting calcium and/or zirconium for at least yttrium. Further claimed is a radiofrequency device comprising a synthetic garnet material as defined herein. |
