abstract A friction stir welding (FSW) tool holder 32 comprising a nickel chromium based alloy. Nickel may be present in the range 67 to 71 wt.%. Chromium may be present in the range 18 to 21 wt.%. Titanium, aluminium, silicon, copper, iron, manganese, cobalt, boron, zirconium and/or sulphur may also be present in the tool holder 32 alloy. Inconel (RTM) or Nimonic (RTM) 80A alloys may be used. The tool holder 32 may have a monolithic or separate trunk member 14. The tool insert may be PCBN, or comprise tungsten rhenium.
