titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the smelting of ores
abstract 309,594. Electro Metallurgical Co., (Assignees of Becket, F. M.). April 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Thermo-aluminic and like metal-extracting processes; alloys.-In a method of obtaining chromium, manganese, and vanadium, an oxygen compound of the metal and a low-carbon silicon alloy or silicide of the metal are caused to react exothermically, in initially solid form and substantially without external heating, yielding a metal low in carbon and silicon and a slag which may be further treated to produce a silicon alloy suitable for the above exothermic reaction. for example by smelting in an electric furnace with carbon and silica, with or without metal or other, additions. The metal compound, which may be used in excess, may be a highly oxidized compound such as vanadium pentoxide, vanadates, chromic anhydride, chromates, or manganese dioxide, and other oxidizing agents such as sodium nitrate, or in some cases bleaching powder, may be present. Iron may be present and the reduced metal incorporated therein.
