Sulphonic acids.-Water soluble condensation products are made bv sulphonating a mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon or a hydroxy derivative thereof and a natural resin and then condensing with an aralkyl halide. They may be used in tanning and as auxiliary substances in dyeing and printing. In examples, (1) colophony dissolved in naphthalene or crude cresol is sulphonated and the product treated with benzyl chloride, (2) the sulphonated product from colophony and phenol is treated with o-chlorobenzyl chloride.
