titleOfInvention Process of producing hydrogen and ammonium phosphates
abstract Ammonium phosphate and hydrogen are made by reacting liquid water, phosphorus, and ammonia under pressure and at temperatures above 100 DEG C. in the presence of a metal of the iron group or a salt thereof. A high temperature, e.g. about 350 DEG C. at a pressure of about 250 atmospheres, gives good results. In the presence of an excess of ammonia and water, the catalyst is unattacked, so that the reaction vessel may consist wholly or to a large extent of said catalyst, e.g. steel. The reagents may be introduced separately, or two in admixture, thus molten phosphorus and ammonia solution, or an emulsion of phosphorus in water and ammonia gas may be separately added, or an emulsion of phosphorus in ammoniacal water may be used. The reaction products are used to preheat the reacting substances. The hydrogen evolved is washed with water to recover its ammonia content for re-use, and after additional purification, if necessary, may be used for the synthesis of ammonia which can be employed in the process and for neutralizing the acid ammonium phosphate produced. The ammonium phosphate solution may be concentrated by reducing its pressure and by additional heating, the slightly alkaline steam evolved being used, after condensation, in the process, together with the mother liquors after crystallization of ammonium phosphate.
