titleOfInvention Manufacture of artificial fibres
abstract Artificial filaments having a tenacity of more than 2 grams per denier are made by spinning viscoses prepared from unripened alkali cellulose or from alkali cellulose which is ripened for a shorter period than the normal, while employing coagulating baths containing 10-30 per cent of sulphuric acid and not less than 30 per cent of ammonium bisulphate. The ammonium bisulphate may be replaced wholly or partly by an equimolecular quantity of sodium or other bisulphate. It is advantageous almost to saturate the acid solution with bisulphate. The baths may contain additions such as glucose, zinc sulphate or glycerine, and it is preferred to maintain the baths at 30-50 DEG C. during the spinning operation. In examples, viscoses prepared from unripened or only slightly ripened alkali celluloses with the use of 30-60 per cent carbon disulphide or by kneading cellulose with caustic soda in a xanthate machine until swelling takes place and then adding 50 per cent carbon disulphide, are coagulated in water containing sulphuric acid, ammonium sodium bisulphates. Specifications 10094/06, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], 166,294, 170,024, 174,961, 192,214, and 334,030, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to.
