abstract | The nitration of cellulose, the dehydration of nitrocellulose by treatment with water-displacing liquids such as alcohol, and the surface treatment of nitrocellulose ammunition powders with volatile-solvent solutions of substances such as camphor and centralite, are effected in centrifuge drums rotating at a relatively high speed and provided with means for continuously withdrawing liquid from the centrifuge and reintroducing it into the centrifuge. Thus, the liquid may be withdrawn by a pump and returned to the centrifuge drum through a cooled pipe, if desired with the aid of a distributing device; the drum may be rotated at 200 r.p.m., and may be provided with a skimming tube to convey the liquid to the pump.
