titleOfInvention A process and apparatus for the manufacture of bands, threads and the like from animal fibres
abstract 419,180. Obtaining animal fibres for use in the manufacture of threads &c. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP KONINKLIJKE PHARMACEUTISCHE FABRIEKEN VOORHEEN BROCADES - STHEEMAN & PHARMACIA, Meppel, Holland. Jan. 23, 1934, No. 2375. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1933. Drawings to Specification. [Class 120 (i).] Bands of material for use in the production of membranes, or as starting materials for threads &c. suitable for use as surgical sutures, violin or racket strings, are obtained from collagenous or elastin-containing animal substances such as sinews or skin by first loosening the substance in a solution, e.g. of acid or an acid substance such as rivanol (2 ethoxy-6À9- diaminoacridine lactate) and then compacting under pressure. When narrow strips are so produced they may be laid together with their edges overlapping and again compressed to unite them into bands. The product may be subsequently tanned. When it is desired to manufacture threads from the bands they are divided into strips and threads are then prepared by twisting or doubling in the known manner. The materials may be worked up under sterile conditions and may be impregnated with chemicals, e.g. iodine and cumene. A layout of apparatus is described comprising a vessel for loosening the fibres of the starting material, presses, a heating drum for drying, rollers for compressing the band passing from the drum, a cutting device for splitting the band, a spinning or doubling apparatus, a vessel for tanning &c. and a drying device.
