titleOfInvention Process and apparatus for casting bodies of indefinite length
abstract 512,953. Casting composite articles etc.; casting-machines. KREIDLER, A. March 23, 1938, No. 8902. Convention date, March 24, 1937. [Class 83 (i)] [Also in Group V] A strip or ingot of indefinite length is made by casting liquid material into a mould lined with continuously travelling bands 3 which may be of a material which will adhere to cast metal by an alloying, chemical, or mechanical action, . e.g., some metals, combustible material, or asbestos. A carbonised layer serves 'to protect the cast metal or the mould or both. If the bands are to alloy with cast metal they may be protected from dross &c. by guards 14, Fig. 5. If the bands do not adhere they may be endless or unwound from one reel and wound on another. The mould 1 is water-cooled 'but the mould 28, Fig. 3, is of skeleton form and the bands are cooled by direct streams of water. The mould may be replaced by rollers 10, 11 and, if two sides of the cast strip are narrow, fixed plates 12, instead of travelling bands, are.. used to form these sides. For strips of rounded cross section the bands are pressed by an annular former 21, Fig. 7, of the desired'section so that they conform to the shape of the mould. Two superposed bands of the same or different material may be used.
