titleOfInvention Improvements in composite materials made from vinyl resins
abstract 537,583. Resinous polymerization products. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. Nov. 21, 1939, No. 30463. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1938. Addition to 518,555. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group IX] Composite materials, e.g. threads, strings, fabrics, stuffing materials &c. are formed from textile, metal, glass or other fibres reinforced with a binding agent comprising filaments or fibres of a co-polymer of a vinyl halide with a vinyl ester of an aliphatic acid having an average macromolecular weight of between 7,500 and 15,000 and being at least partly fuzed to the other fibres. The vinyl resin may contain from about 50 per cent. to 95 per cent. by weight of the halide and the filaments or fibres may be stretched about 400 per cent. prior to incorporation with the other fibres. Yarns may be made by twisting or doubling the vinyl resin fibre or filament with other continuous artificial or natural filaments or with continuous threads of cotton, linen, hemp and wool or from a mixture of staple fibres of the vinyl resin and other natural or artificial staple fibres. Specification 406,338 and U.S.A. Specification 1,990,685 are referred to.
