titleOfInvention | Improved process for the manufacture of composite materials, for example, moulded laminated structures and articles of manufacture produced thereby |
abstract | In the production of composite materials such as moulded p laminated structures, glass fibres having a diameter of 0.002 inch or less are pre-coated with an oil-modified phenolaldehyde resin and are then bonded with a phenol-formaldehyde resin. The fibres may be used in the form of a felt, or a woven, knitted or braided fabric made from continuous filament glass yarn. Staple glass fibres may be included. The fabrics may contain an amylaceous material such as starch customarily incorporated in the yarns in small quantity to facilitate weaving or knitting. The pre-coated fabric is coated by dipping once or repeatedly in a solution of the bonding phenol-formaldehyde resin, which may be the same as the pre-coating resin, and is dried after each dip. The coated fabric may be superposed in layers to form a laminated material, or wound into rod form, and moulded under heat and pressure. The oil-modified phenol-aldehyde resin may be prepared from phenol, cresol or xylenol, formaldehyde, and tung or oiticica oil, and applied as a toluene solution, which may contain a plasticiser such as diamyl or dibutyl phthalate, or tricresyl phosphate. The laminated materials may be used for aeroplane propellers or structural parts, and reaction vessels, and the rods as tie-rods for circuit-breakers. |
