titleOfInvention Method of and means for continuous casting of solid or hollow sections in ferrous metals
abstract 588,618. Continuous casting-machines; casting processes ; moulds. ANDREWS, H., and JAMES & CO. (BIRMINGHAM), Ltd. Oct. 5, 1944, Nos. 19148 and 22760. [Class 83 (i)] Electricity, heating by.-A continuous-casting machine for producing cast - iron of predetermined properties comprises a hollow graphite die 16 to which molten iron is fed and means for heating the inlet end A and cooling the outlet end B of the die, and for continuously withdrawing the solid metal at such a rate, in relation to the temperature gradient of the metal along the die, that the metal is cooled at the required rate. The molten metal is supplied to a crucible 10, set in graphite or other refractory material 11 in a box, fed from cupola or mixer. The end A of the die is also set in the material 11. The crucible may be heated by a water-cooled highfrequency coil 17 and the end A by a coil 18 or by gas or oil. The end B is surrounded by a water jacket 19. The bar 22 may be withdrawn by rollers or draw chains 25 driven by a variable speed motor 31. Two or more dies may be arranged in the material 11 and be fed from one reservoir. The die may be long enough to support the solid metal until it has sufficient strength. The rate of cooling, particularly of molybdenum iron, after leaving the die, may be retarded by arranging a still-air chamber or one heated by flue gases from the gas or oil heaters. For malleable white iron, which may contain titanium, the casting leaving the die may be continuously annealed. The crosssection of the die may increase to correspond to the expansion of the iron on solidification. Travelling saws &c. may be used to cut the bar into lengths. By using a core hollow sections may be produced. In other modifications, the die is arranged with its axis vertical or inclined, the lower end being immersed in molten iron while the bar is withdrawn from the upper end. The method may also be used to form grey cast-iron with a low silicon content. austenitic iron free from cementite and containing chromium, molybdenum, tin, or other hardening element.
