abstract Polymers of 2-chloro-1.3-butadiene are plasticized with polybutadiene (see Group V). The polybutadiene may be prepared by heating butadiene under pressure at 122 DEG F. with sodium oleate, potassium persulphate, dodecyl mercaptan and water till 80 per cent conversion has occurred. Phenyl b -naphthylamine is then added to the emulsion and unpolymerized butadiene removed by vacuum distillation. The latex may be coagulated with aluminium sulphate.ALSO:Polychloroprene is plasticized with polybutadiene, which may be prepared according to the method described in Group IV, to give a composition which is resistant to hardening at low temperatures. In many examples giving preferred compositions, these two substances are mixed with varying proportions of substances chosen from sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black, particularly soft black P.33, dibenzothiazyl disulphide, light calcined magnesia, candelilla wax, phenyl b -naphthylamine, and piperidinium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate.
