abstract A polishing composition comprises a lithium salt of an organic carboxylic acid containing at least 8 carbon atoms and which has been melted and heated below the decomposition temperature thereof until a substantial reduction in the viscosity of the melted compositions occurred. Waxes and/or solvents may be present before heating. Where a solvent is used it is preferred that the heat-treating step is conducted under conditions retaining substantially all of the solvent in the finished product. Specified acids are caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, stearic, palmitic, oleic, linoleic, rininoleic, heptadecanoic, arachidic, sylvic, sebacic, ethyl benzoic, isopropyl salicylic, diisobutyl salicylic, naphthoic, capryl oxy-acetic, di-isobutyl-oxy-acetic, di-hydroxy stearic, caseinogen and dibromo-blaidic acids. Specified waxes are carnauba, montan, beeswax, paraffin, candelilla, ceresin ozokerite, chlorinated paraffins, high boiling esters, alcohols and oxidised petroleum products. Specified solvents are hexane, benzene, kerosene, gasoline, toluene and turpentine. U.S.A. Specifications 2,010,297, 2,066,296, and 2,126,096 are referred to.
