titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of vinyl cyanide
abstract A catalyst mass comprising a chromite of zinc or cadmium or mixtures thereof is employed in the preparation of vinyl cyanide from acetylene and hydrogen cyanide (see Group IV (b)). The catalyst mass may also contain chromites of other metals, especially those of metals having an atomic weight greater than 50, in which case the chromite content of the catalyst mass should not contain more than 50 per cent of such chromites; there may also be present alkali metal cyanides and the oxide catalysts described in Specification 603,700. The zinc and cadmium chromites may be prepared by reacting a soluble salt of zinc or cadmium with a chromate such as ammonium chromate and reducing the resulting zinc or cadmium chromate to chromite by heating, for example at 400 DEG C; they may also be prepared in situ by passing acetylene and hydrogen cyanide over the corresponding chromates at 400-500 DEG C. In examples, catalysts described are zinc-cadmium chromite and zinc chromite both prepared as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,066,153. Other chromites mentioned are zinc - manganese-chromite, zinc - cadmium - cobalt - nickel - chromite, zinc - cadmium - mercury - chromite and zinc-iron-chromite.ALSO:Vinyl cyanide is prepared by reacting acetylene with hydrogen cyanide in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst mass comprising a chromite of zinc or cadmium. The catalyst mass may also contain chromites of other metals, especially of metals having an atomic weight greater than 50, but the chromite content of the catalyst should not contain more than 50 per cent of the chromites of other metals. The catalysts may also be mixed with alkali metal cyanides and the oxide catalysts described in Specification 603,700. The reaction may be carried out at 200 DEG to 600 DEG C. and inert diluents may be present. The chromite catalysts may be prepared by reacting a water-soluble zinc or cadmium salt with for example, ammonium chromate and reducing the resulting zinc or cadmium chromates to the chromites by heating. If desired, the chromite catalyst may be prepared from the chromate in situ in the reaction of acetylene and hydrogen by use of temperatures of 400 DEG to 500 DEG C. In examples, mixtures of acetylene, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen are passed over heated catalysts comprising zinc-cadmium chromite and zinc-chromite respectively, both prepared according to U.S.A. Specification 2,066,153. Other catalysts mentioned are zinc-manganese-chromite, zinc-cadmium-cobalt-nickel-chromite, zinc-cadmium-mercury-chromite and zinc-iron chromite.
