abstract | 612,168. Switching systems for resistance heaters. BADER, K. E. May 14, 1946, No. 14583. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVII] A switch operated by thermal expansion of a gas in which the time of operation may be selectively determined (see Group XXXVII) may be used for wattage-control of an oven or the like. A differential gas-pressure, mercury U-tube switch, Fig. 10, is connected in series with its heater-filament and an external load 25. The heater-filament is shunted by a variable resistance 22 to vary the time of operation of the switch, and hence the average power supplied to the load. Alternatively, the U-tube switch may have normally open contacts, Fig. 11, and a high-voltage heater 26 is situated in the left-hand limb 1, and energized over an auxiliary contact 27 which opens when the main circuit through electrodes 8, 9 is closed. A resistor 85 in series with the heater filament controls the time of operation. |
