abstract 617,136. Blasting cartridges. IGNATIEFF, A. Sept. 20, 1946, No. 28215. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to gas-producing charges and their associated igniters for blasting cartridges, such as are described in Specification 480,330, in which the blasting medium is a non-combustible gas, e.g. CO 2 , confined under pressure in a container having a rupturable sealing disc, the pressure in the container being raised to rupture the disc by ignition of the gas-producing charge. The invention provides a non-explosive gas-producing unit in which the igniter is of a composition combustible in air and is associated with a gas-producing charge not combustible in air at atmospheric pressure but supporting combustion under pressure of the blasting medium. The unit consists of a paper tube 6¥ in. long, internal diameter ¢ in. and thickness <SP>1</SP>/ 32 in. The tube is filled with the gas-producing charge and closed at each end by a wooden plug. About ¢ grain of igniting composition is used and may be that of an ordinary match head or other compositions including an oxidiser unaffected by pressure and moisture such as potassium perchlorate, potassium chlorate, potassium bichromate or potassium permanganate and a fuel such as charcoal powder or finely-divided metal compound.
