Improvements in or relating to textile rolls |
abstract |
A covering for a textile roll comprises an ethylene-modified polyvinyl alcohol which preferably is the product of the hydrolysis of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate containing 5 per cent ethylene. A plasticizer may be incorporated, preferred proportions being 5 to 60 parts by weight of plasticizer per 100 parts by weight of modified polyvinyl alcohol, a preferred composition containing 25 to 35 parts by weight of ethylene glycol. Other plasticizers which may be used are diethylene glycol and glycerine. Finely-divided particles such as cork granules, wood flour, sand, or particles of soft wood or balsa may be incorporated. The hydrolysis of the ethylene vinyl ester copolymers is preferably carried out by dissolving the copolymer in a primary alcohol such as methanol or ethanol, or in a mixture of such alcohol and a hydrocarbon such as toluene, and treating the solution with a suitable hydrolysing agent such as an alkali. The modified polyvinyl alcohol may be applied to a base material in the form of a moulded coating or may be dissolved in hot water and sprayed or brushed on to a roll of other material. |
