titleOfInvention Lubricating compositions
abstract A lubricating composition comprises a co-polymer of an alkylene oxide or glycol with a derivative thereof having one hydrogen atom replaced by the group -R-X, in which R is a hydrocarbon radical and X is an ether or amino radical, a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group, and an antioxidant, anticorrosion and/or gelling agents. Copolymers of alkylene oxides and glycols with bis-(hydroxyalkyl)-sulphides or polysulphides may also be present. Typical alkylene oxides are ethylene, dimethylethylene and a ,a 1-dimethylethylene oxides; and typical glycols are ethylene, diethylene, triethylene, tetraethylene, hexa-, hepta-, octa-, nona-, deca-, and dodeca-methylene glycols and their alkyl derivatives. Their derivatives are typified by the glycidyl ethers, epichlorohydrin, 1,2-epoxy-3 - hydroxypropane and 1,2 - epoxy - 3 - aminopropane, 1,2 - dihydroxy - 3 - methoxypropane, 2,3 - dihydroxy - 4 - aminobutane, 1,2 - dihydroxy - 5 - chloropentane, 1,3 - dihydroxy - 2 - methoxypropane, 2,4 - dihydroxy - 3 - chlorobutane, 1,5-dihydroxy-4-aminopentane. The copolymers may be prepared by heating, e.g. at 150-300 DEG C., in the presence of catalysts, e.g. boron trifluoride and its ether complex, aluminium chloride, sulphuric and halogen acids, stannic chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid and sodium and potassium hydroxides, in liquid, solution, emulsion or gaseous phases. Suitable diluents are aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons. After removal of catalyst the copolymers may be dehydrated, decolourized by treatment with bleaching agents, by percolation in solution through fuller's earth, or by hydrogenation. The terminal hydroxyl groups in the products may be partially or wholly esterified or etherified simultaneously with or subsequent to polymerization. Examples describe the copolymerization of propylene oxide and (1), (2) and (3) N,N-diethyl epihydrin amine; (4) epichlorhydrin; (5) glycidyl isopropyl ether; and (6) glycidyl methylisobutylcarbinyl ether. Specification 477,843 is referred to.
