titleOfInvention Phenol-modified acetone resins
abstract A phenol - modified formaldehyde - acetone resin is made by condensing a mixture of phenol, formaldehyde and acetone in the presence of a water-soluble inorganic base in amount to impart to the mixture a pH value between 9.5 and 11.5, the formaldehyde and acetone being present in amount of one to two mols. of formaldehyde per mol. of acetone and the phenol between 2 and 35 per cent by weight of the acetone. For equimolecular proportions of acetone and aldehyde 2-10 per cent of phenol is preferably used, and for larger proportions of aldehyde, 10 to 35 per cent of phenol is preferred. Cresols, xylenols and p-phenylphenols may replace phenol, and paraformaldehyde may replace formaldehyde. Catalysts used, e.g. in amount of 1-2 per cent by weight of the reactants, are alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides. In examples, (1) equimolecular amounts, and (2) 2 : 1 molar proportions of formaldehyde and acetone are reacted with phenol in the presence of caustic soda. The exothermic reaction is controlled by cooling to below the boiling point of acetone; unreacted acetone is removed by distillation and the mass is dehydrated by vacuum distillation. The resins, to which additional hardening catalysts, e.g. diethylamine, may be added, may be used for making laminated articles, by applying a varnish of the resin in alcoholic solution to the surface of paper, wood veneer or cloth, and evaporating the alcohol, the treated sheets being then assembled into a stack and subjected to heat and pressure. In example 3 (cancelled) of the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, formaldehyde (2.6 mols.) is reacted with acetone (1 mol.) in the presence of caustic soda, and the reaction mixture is condensed in the presence of caustic soda with phenol in amount of 172.5 per cent by weight of the acetone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
