titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to presses for the continuous extrusion of tubes
abstract 659,975. Extruding. SIEMENS: SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Sept. 30, 1949, No. 25256. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1948. [Class 83 (iv)] A press for the continuous extrusion of tubes and particularly lead sheaths for electric cables having a hollow cylindrical driving worm revolving between two stationary pressure sleeves is characterized in that the walls of the driving worm possess pressure equalizing apertures. The worm 1 has an outer screw-thread 2 and an inner thread 3 and is driven by a gear 7. In the zone of maximum pressure four pressure equalizing apertures 10 are uniformly spaced around the periphery of the worm 1 and displaced relatively to one another along the longitudinal axis of the worm 1. The discharge end of the worm facing a die 17 is tapered and provided with a thread 12. The die 17 is axially adjustable by a hollow screw 19. The worm 1 is encased in outer and inner pressure sleeves 22, 23 each being provided with screwthreads 24, 25 which arrest the conveyance of the metal and prevent its rotation. The screwthreads 24, 25 are of opposite hand to those on the driving worm and single or multiple threads of square, rectangular, buttress or blade-shaped profile finished smooth and hardened may be used. Molten metal is continuously supplied to inlet 26, the stream being divided to surround the worm 1 and united in the discharge chamber 15. Electric heating coils 28, 29 and 30 heat the metal residue in the press prior to setting the worm in operation. Water cooling channels 31 and 32 are provided in the outer and inner pressure sleeves 22, 23. When extruding cable sheaths the cable 20 enters through a protective tube 21 and passes through a mandrel 16 and then through the die 17.
