titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the removal of ammonia from water |
abstract | Ammonia is removed from water by passing the water through a bed of base-exchange material such as sodium-aluminium-silicate (natural as greensand or synthetic) which has taken up manganese ions and then been subjected to an oxidizing treatment with sodium hypochlorite. The sodium-aluminium-silicate bed is treated with a dilute aqueous solution of manganous chloride in order to make it take up manganese ions, the manganous chloride remaining in the bed being removed by washings with water. The bed is then initially treated with an oxidizing agent such as an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate, the excess solution being removed by washing with water which also removes precipitated manganese oxides not adhering to the exchange material. The bed is then regenerated with sodium hypochlorite from time to time as its capacity for removel of ammonia is reduced. The initial oxidation of the manganese may also be effected with sodium hypochlorite. |
