titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to frequency and phase stabilising circuit arrangements
abstract 684,217. Automatic frequency and phase control systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 18, 1951 [May 22, 1950], No. 11666/51. Class 38 (iv). Relates to A.F.C. systems of the kind in which a wave source 1, 2 is controlled in frequency and phase by a reference source 9 by mixing the two waves at 8 and feeding the resultant through a filter 10, 11 to the grid of a frequency control tube 5; and consists in extending the " catching " zone by utilizing the voltage in the anode circuit of the control tube 5 to strike a neon tube 12 which creates a sweep voltage for application to the grid of the control tube. The control tube operates as a thermionic reactance across the tuned circuit 2 of the oscillator 1. If the frequency of the source 1 is beyond the catching range, excess current through the valve 5 raises the voltage across the anode resistor 15. This causes the neon tube to strike and creates a saw-tooth voltage across the network 13, 14 which is applied to the grid of the control tube 5, thus reducing the anode current and allowing the voltage across the network 15, 16 to fall until the tube 12 is extinguished. If the frequency sweep thus applied to the oscillator fails to produce locking, the cycle is repeated. In a modified circuit, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a single pentode valve operates both as a wave source and as a frequency control, the neon tube being connected between the anode and grid circuits in such manner that it strikes when the anode current is at a minimum.
