[Also in Group XXVII] A layer of heat-insulating material 3, e.g a paste of graphite or ceramic powder, or soot, and a binding agent such as turpentine, is applied to the outer surface of a hollow combustion chamber 1 and, before or after the paste has dried, portions of a cylinder head 2 are cast around the chamber. Heat insulation may be effected by confined gases or vapours formed from the paste during casting of the head. There may be external annular projections on a part of the chamber in contact with the head. |
