titleOfInvention | Improvements in electric signal translating circuits employing semiconductor devices |
abstract | 694,025. Telephone transmission systems. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. April 22, 1949 [April 23, 1948], No. 10757/49. Addition to 694,021. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XL (c)] An electric signal translating circuit comprising a semi-conductor device according to the parent Specification comprises a potential source connected between one of the input electrodes and a third electrode, and means comprising a resistor connected between the other input electrode and a point of fixed potential for the purpose of biasing the said other electrode. Fig. 1 shows a three-stage amplifier, each stage comprising a block of N-type germanium 1, having an emitter electrode 4, collector electrode 5 and a base electrode 6. The input is applied via transformer 7 between emitter 4 and base electrode 6, and the output is taken from the collector electrode of the third stage via transformer 14. The semi-conducting block and its associated electrodes amplify the signals, as described in the parent Specification, the emitter requiring a small positive bias, and the collector a larger negative bias relative to the base electrode. The collector electrode 5 is connected to a source of negative potential 9. The invention is based on the fact that current flows through the body of the block and across the high resistance barrier 3 to the base electrode 6 even if no signals exist, and a resistance 11, by-passed for signal frequencies by condenser 12, is connected so as to provide a biasing potential for the base electrode relative to the emitter. The source of separate bias for the emitter shown in the parent Specification is then unnecessary. Other circuits are described, including those of the " grounded grid " (i.e. " grounded base ") and " cathode follower " (i.e. " emitter follower ") type and Fig. 2 shows a telephonic amplifier according to the invention suitable for use at an unattended repeater station in which the potential source 29 is located at some distance from the amplifying elements. Specifications 632,942, [Group XL (c)], and 694,022, [Group XXXVI], also are referred to. |
