A liquid suspension consists of (1) a dispersed phase comprising finely divided solid polymeric chlorotrifluoroethylene, and (2) a dispersing medium comprising (a) an organic liquid mixture which includes a low polymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene and which is a solvent for the polymer at elevated temperature but below the boiling point of the liquid, and (b) a non-solvent, liquid, oxygen-containing diluent having a boiling point above 50 DEG C. and selected from the following:-straight chain and cyclic aliphatic ethers, saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols, including halogenated alcohols, aliphatic ketones, aliphatic esters, aliphatic lactones, aliphatic acetals, mixtures of aliphatic monohydric saturated alcohols and aliphatic dihydric saturated alcohols, and mixtures thereof. Solvents at elevated temperatures specified are pseudocumene, mesitylene, tert.-butylbenzene, paraditert.-butylbenzene, para-tert.-butyltoluene, alpha-methyl-para-methyl styrene, distyrene, amylbiphenyl, diamylbiphenyl, para-cymene, beta-methylnaphthalene. "Solvesso" (Registered Trade Mark) 150, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, dibutyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, dioctyl tetrachlorophthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) tetrachlorophthalate, methyl stearate, tributyl citrate, tributyl tricarballylate, acetyl tributyl citrate, triethylene glycol di-(2-ethylhexoate), beta-naphthyl benzoate, alpha-chloronaphthalene, hexachlorobutadiene, fluorinated organic compounds having a boiling point above 110 DEG C. selected from nuclearly fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbons containing two aromatic nuclei free of other substituents, for example alpha-fluoronaphthalene, halogenated (e.g. chlorinated or brominated) derivatives of lower alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbons containing fluorine in the alkyl substituent, and fluorinated chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of the C3 and C4 series containing at least 2 chlorine atoms, and other solvents referred to in Specification 676,597. Suitable low polymers of chlorotrifluoroethylene are those having the recurring structural unit (CF2-CFCl)n where n is from 4 to 16 inclusive, such as those described in Specification 676,597. Non-solvent, liquid, oxygen-containing diluents specified are diisopropyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, dioxane, tetrahydrofurane, 1, 2-di-n-butoxy ethane, n-butyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, n-amyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, n-hexyl alcohol, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, tert.-amyl-2-ethylhexanol, chlorohydrin, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol acetate, chloroethyl acetate, beta-methoxy-ethyl acetate, methyl lactate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl-n-propyl ketone, diacetone, dimethyl acetal, 1, 3-dioxolane, dichloromethyl formal, bisbeta-methoxyethyl formal, gamma-butyrolactone, alpha-methyl gamma-valerolactone, and mixtures of the above-mentioned aliphatic monohydric alcohols with saturated aliphatic dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, 2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol, and dipropylene glycol. The compositions may be made by grinding micropulverized polychlorotrifluoroethylene with the liquid dispersant in a ball or pebble mill, and may be employed to coat electrical conductors which are then heated to 350 DEG to 425 DEG C. to sinter the polymer particles; alternatively the compositions may be used for coating and impregnating glass cloth, glass batting, asbestos cloth, catalpa clay, bentonite, titanium dioxide, silica, lead silicate, and lead titanate. Specification 659,977, (as open to inspection under Sect. 91), also is referred to. |
