titleOfInvention Process for the production of lithium borohydride
abstract Lithium borohydride is produced by reacting sodium or postasium borohydride with a lithium salt to effect double decomposition in the presence of a solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofurane or glycol formal, for the lithium salt and lithium borohydride, which solvent is inert to lithium borohydride. The lithium salt should be a salt of an acid whose sodium or potassium salt is only sparingly soluble in the solvent, and should be in excess of that theoretically required. The resulting lithium borohydride solution may be decanted from the precipitated sodium or potassium salt and is concentrated by partial evaporation of the solvent, e.g. until the concentration of borohydride is 6 grm. mols. per litre, when the majority of the excess lithium salt is precipitated and may be removed by decantation. The resulting moist lithium salt may be reused. The concentrated solution may be used as such or all solvent may be evaporated to yield a hygroscopic white solid. In an example powdered lithium chloride is added to a tetrahydrofurane suspension of potassium borohydride where the concentration may be 1-3.5 grm. mols of borohydride per litre in amount of 1.25 mols. per mol. of borohydride at 20 DEG C. The bromide iodide and nitrate are stated to be less satisfactory.
