titleOfInvention | Method of dyeing structures comprising the acrylonitrile polymers |
abstract | Yarns, fabrics and other materials made of interpolymers of acrylonitrile and vinyl-substituted tertiary heterocyclic amines are dyed in an aqueous medium containing an acid dye and 1-10 per cent by weight of nitric acid, based on the weight of the interpolymer. The process is applicable to interpolymers derived from the vinyl-substituted tertiary heterocyclic amines listed in Specification 693,864 and also alkyl-vinylpyrazines and 2 : 4-dimethyl-1-vinylimidazole. A third component may be present, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, methacrylonitrile, acrylates p or methacrylates. The material may also be a blend of a polymer as above with a polyacrylonitrile which is not receptive to acid dyes. The materials so dyed may be in the form of continuous filaments, staple fibres, yarns, films, rods, tubes or fabrics. Preferred polymers are those blended from polyacrylonitrile and 2-50 per cent of a copolymer of 10-70 per cent of acrylonitrile and 30-90 per cent of vinyl-substituted amine as above; such polymer should contain at least 80 per cent of acrylonitrile. Typical of these are polymers containing 80-98 per cent of acrylonitrile and 2-20 per cent of a vinylpyridine or 80 per cent or more of acrylonitrile and 2 per cent or more of a 1-vinylimidazole. In the examples, (1) a fabric woven from filament yarn of polyacrylonitrile containing 6 per cent of 2-vinylpyridine is dyed with Crocein Scarlet M00 in a bath containing nitric acid (6.4 per cent of yarn weight); (2) a skein of yarn as in (1) is dyed with Xylene Light Yellow 2G in a bath to which a total of 10 per cent of nitric acid (on yarn weight) is added in four portions; (3) fibres as in (1) are entered into a bath containing Superchrome Yellow RN, Omega Chrome Brown EB, Omega Chrome Black Blue G, Omega Chrome Red B, Omega Chrome Blue 2BL and an ethylene oxide-amine condensate; 10 per cent of nitric acid is added in five portions and after-chroming is carried out with potassium dichromate and nitric acid; the shade is red before chroming, changed to olive drab. |
