titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to abrading elements
abstract 723,314. Compound sheet materials; multiple-ply paper. KLINGSPOR, C. May 30, 1951 [May 31, 1950; July 14, 1950], No. 12787/51. Drawings to Specification. Classes 96 and 140. Abrading elements are manufactured by impregnating a sheet of fibrous material of open structure, e.g. unsized or lightly sized paper, calendered plain paper, thick blotting paper, creped or crinkled paper, or textile fabric, with an adhesive capable of hardening under heat, coating the impregnated sheet with abrasive granules, superimposing several layers of the impregnated and coated sheet material, uniting the layer to form the abrading elements and hardening the adhesive under heat. Reinforcements, e.g. perforated sheet metal, textile fabric, wire mesh or the like may be arranged between the superimposed impregnated and coated sheets such reinforcement having previously been treated with an adhesive capable of hardening. Abrading elements of a particular shape are produced by employing correspondingly shaped presses, examples of which are described. Cylindrical abrading elements may be formed by winding the fibrous sheet material after impregnation and, if desired, application of an additional adhesive followed by coating with abrasive, on a mandrel in several layers and subjecting to heat treatment. In an example a crepe paper is saturated with, e.g., a solution of 100 parts of phenol formaldehyde resin resol in 60 parts of alcohol, in an impregnating device, the paper then squeezed out, dried for 3 to 4 hours, e.g. at 60‹ C., to remove the alcohol, after which it is coated with an emulsion of resin and animal glue, sprinkled with abrasive granules and dried for 3 to 4 hours at 60‹ C., whereupon it is cut into discs or rings which are placed in a press and one or more reinforcements of fabric, perforated sheet metal, wire gauze or the like which have been previously treated with an artificial resin, placed between the layers which are pressed at about 70 to 80 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, at 120‹ to 180‹ C.
