titleOfInvention | An improved method of grain-refining during the casting of high-melting-point metals especially iron and steel in chill moulds |
abstract | A method of grain-refining during casting of high-melting-point metals, especially iron and steel, in metal chill-moulds, consists of blowing deoxidizing and grain-refining agents into the casting stream or on to the surface of the molten mass in the mould, by a carrier-gas current. Suitable agents are: aluminium, titanium and its alloys, zirconium and its alloys, calcium, calcium silicide, vanadium and its alloys and alloys of these materials with each other with the addition of iron. The alloys may contain small amounts of boron, beryllium, barium, strontium, cerium, lanthanum, hafnium or thorium. The agent is powdered preferably having a grain size smaller than 0.3 mm. A suitable agent for chromo-nickel-steels to be added in the amount of 0.25 per cent of the cast material and having a grain size smaller than 0.15 mm., comprises 15 per cent calcium, 30 per cent silicon, 10 per cent aluminium, 10 per cent titanium, 30 per cent cerium plus lanthanum and the remainder of iron with its unavoidable impurities, especially carbon. |
