titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of aromatic dicarboxylic acid nitriles |
abstract | Dinitriles of aromatic dicarboxylic acids in which the two carboxylic acid groups are not in the ortho or peri positions with respect to one another are manufactured by a process which comprises passing a mixture of ammonia and an alkyl diester of such an acid, wherein the alkyl groups contain up to four carbon atoms, over a solid dehydration catalyst at a temperature between 300 DEG and 600 DEG C. Aromatic dicarboxylic acids mentioned are isophthalic and terephthalic acids, diphenyl-3 : 31-dicarboxylic acid, diphenyl-4 : 41-dicarboxylic acid, diphenylmethane - 4 : 41 - dicarboxylic acid, dibenzyl-4 : 41 - dicarboxylic acid and stilbene - 4 : 41-dicarboxylic acid. Dehydration catalysts mentioned are those which have been found suitable for the conversion of carboxylic acids plus ammonia to their nitriles and include boron phosphate, silica gel and alumina. In examples isophthalonitrile is obtained by passing diethyl isophthalate down a heated tube containing silica gel through which ammonia gas is passing (1); terephthalonitrile, 3 : 31-dicyanodiphenylmethane and 4 : 41-dicyanodiphenyl are produced similarly by passing through a heated tube containing boron phosphate through which ammonia gas is passing, dimethyl terephthalate, diethyldiphenylmethane 3 : 31 - dicarboxylate and diethyl diphenyl 4 : 41-dicarboxylate respectively. The product in (3) is recrystallized from ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Diethyl diphenylmethane - 3 : 31 - dicarboxylate is prepared by reacting benzoic acid and formalin in the presence of sulphuric acid and boiling the diphenylmethane-3 : 31-dicarboxylic acid produced with ethanol and sulphuric acid. Specification 413,639 is referred to. |
