titleOfInvention Water-tight device for the driving shaft of the centrifugal circulating pump of a washing machine
abstract 757,870. Stuffing-box substitutes. SOC. ANON. DES USINES J. GALLAY. Dec. 7, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953; June 23, 1954], No. 35421/54. Class 122(5) A low pressure is maintained on the face of a flexible cup packing 18 for the shaft 8 of a centrifugal circulating pump for a washing machine by providing at least one passage 33 through the hub of the pump impeller and a small clearance 34 between the impeller and the casing 10. The clearance, which may be between 1 and 2 mm., produces a turbulence which prevents any flow of water from the pump outlet 11 to the region 32 in which the packing is situated. A second seal of the rubbing-collar type is provided below the packing 18 and consists of a stainless steel washer 21 secured to the packing 18 by a rubber washer 23 and a carbon ring 25 mounted for rotation with the shaft 8 and held against the washer 21 by a spring 26. A sheath 30 holds the spring 26, the ring 25 and a rubber sleeve 29 to which the ring 25 is vulcanized in as- -sembled relation. When the machine is running the sheath 30 flings any leakage past the two seals clear of the bearing 31 in which the shaft 8 is mounted, while when the machine is stationary the sheath deflects any leakage on to a part 36 of the machine frame. A flexible cup packing 14 is also provided at the inlet side of the pump impeller. In a modification, the washers 23 and 21 are dispensed with and the carbon ring 25 engages a reinforcing element in the packing 18.
