abstract A composition for lowering the cholesterol level in the blood serum comprises a compound of formula <FORM:0760114/VI/1> where R represents an alkyl or aryl radical, R1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical. R2 represents an alkyl or alkylene radical, m is 0 or 1 and X is an OH group, a group OMn where M is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, aluminium or magnesium and n such that nx (valency of M) = 1, and OB group, B being the cation of an organic base, or an NH2 group, together with a therapeutically inactive and non-toxic solid or semi-solid vehicle, an isotonic solution or a fatty oil. Specified compounds include sodium phenylethyl acetate, phenylethylacetamide, sodium phenyl methylacetate, and sodium phenylethyl propionate. The active compound may be mixed with starch, magnesium stearate or talc to form tablets, with cocoa butter to form suppositories or isotonic solutions or fatty oils for parenteral injection. In an example tablets are prepared from a composition comprising phenylethylacetamide, starch, magnesium stearate and talc.
