titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to the production of mica splittings |
abstract | Mica splittings are obtained by heating mica to a temperature sufficient to remove the water of a constitution, mixing the heated mica with a cold combustible liquid whereby said liquid is absorbed along the clearage planes of the mica, and subjecting the mica so treated to a second heat treatment which results at least partly from combustion of the said liquid to vaporize the absorbed liquid to promote a clearage of the mica into thin flakes. Alternatively the second heat treatment is effected in an inert atmosphere, the combustible liquid being a volatile hydrocarbon which vaporizes rapidly without leaving a carbon deposit on the mica. Muscovite mica is heated to 800 DEG C., or phlogopite mica to 1100 DEG C., for 20 to 40 minutes, and when still hot is plunged into paraffin or other combustible mineral oil. The treated mica is then heated to cause rapid vaporization of the oil to split the mica into thin flakes. When the heating is effected in air the oil burns, and decarbonization of the mica is necessary at about 400 DEG C. Whilst still hot the mica flakes are dropped into water to produce a suspension suitable for the manufacture of insulating material. Alternatively the paraffin oil is vaporized in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen to render decarbonization unnecessary. |
