titleOfInvention | A method of smelting ore, particularly iron ore |
abstract | In a method of smelting ore, particularly iron ore, in the form of briquettes within a shaft furnace wherein the charge column is maintained at a height of 2-6 m. above the tuyere level, the briquettes consist of a coking and strongly swelling coal with a grain size of 0.001-4.0 mm., of part or all the ore, with or without a flux material, the ore and/or the flux material if present, having a grain size of 0.001-0.5 mm. The briquettes preferably have a volume of less than 300 c.c. and the ore not included in the briquettes may be added to the furnace as lumps of the same size as the briquettes. The tars, produced by the low temperature carbonization, are recovered from the exit gases of the furnace by condensation, said exit gases having a temperature of 250 DEG -700 DEG C. Briquettes containing limestone and pitch together with (a) magnetite and (b) hermatite, are referred to in the examples. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 676,962 and 720,026. |
