titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the heating of fluids
abstract 808,090. Combustion apparatus; fluidized beds. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Nov. 12, 1956 [Dec. 12, 1955], No. 34507/56. Class 51 (1). Fluid, e.g. water, passing through a coil 36 is heated in a fluidized bed 22 of the apparatus shown wherein fuel is supplied to a bed 18 of highly active catalytic material through valvecontrolled pipes 24 and to the bed 22-of suitable material having a lower degree of catalytic activity-through valve-controlled pipes 26. The bed 18 is confined between perforated plates 12, 20, and remains relatively static during apparatus operation, whilst the bed 22 is fluidized by hot gases projected up through the bed housing 10. Fluidizing gaseous comburrent, e.g. air, issues into the space below the plate 12 from a pipe 46 which is connected to an air heater 48. The bed 22 may be of an inert non-catalytic form, and the plate 20 may be omitted, division between the beds being maintained by providing a particle size for bed 18 of a suitable nature and appropriately controlling the air flow velocity from the blower 44. Pipework may be provided so that the air may by-pass the lower bed 18, being directly introduced into the bed 22. After the bed 18 is heated the heater 48 may be de-energized.
